Utahns For Affordable Housing

Understanding what changed, asking the hard questions, and working toward realistic solutions for housing in Utah.

Why This Group Matters

For much of the past century, it was widely possible for a working household to afford a home, raise a family, and build financial stability over time.

Today, that path has become far more difficult for many people.

Across Utah, a growing share of household income is now required just to secure housing. Young families struggle to enter the housing market, renters face increasing costs, and many working households feel that something fundamental has changed.

This group exists to ask an important question:

How did we get here — and what can be done about it?

Group Description

Utahns For Affordable Housing is a TVS-sponsored group focused on understanding and addressing the growing challenge of housing affordability in Utah.

Across the state, many households are experiencing something that previous generations did not face to the same degree: a steadily increasing share of income going toward housing. For many working individuals and families, the possibility of owning a home, supporting a household, and building long-term financial stability has become significantly more difficult than it once was.

Not long ago, it was more common for a working household to afford a home while maintaining reasonable financial margin for raising children, saving, and participating in community life. Today, many families find that housing costs alone consume a large portion of their income, leaving far less room for stability and opportunity.

Rather than approaching the issue with predetermined conclusions, Utahns For Affordable Housing invites thoughtful and informed discussion about the many factors that may be contributing to rising housing costs and increasing financial pressure on working households.

Participants are encouraged to examine the issue honestly and seriously, recognizing that housing affordability is influenced by a wide range of interconnected forces — economic, demographic, regulatory, financial, and cultural.

By bringing together people with real experience and diverse perspectives, the group aims to better understand the underlying dynamics shaping housing costs and to explore practical ways to improve housing accessibility for Utah residents.

Areas the Group May Explore

Members of this group may examine a wide range of questions, including:

  • How have housing prices changed relative to household income over time?
    • What role does population growth and migration play in housing demand?
    • How do land-use policies, zoning practices, and planning decisions affect housing supply?
    • What impacts do development costs, financing structures, and building regulations have on housing prices?
    • How do taxes, impact fees, utilities, and insurance influence housing costs?
    • How has the mix of housing types changed over the past several decades?
    • What incentives shape what types of housing get built?
    • What role do wages, economic structure, and household income patterns play in affordability?
    • How have broader economic changes affected the ability of working households to build wealth through housing?

These and other questions can help participants better understand the issue and identify solutions that are both realistic and constructive.
